How many Indian owls can you spot in this picture? The answer will surprise you

At first glance, it looks like nothing more than a rugged rock face, layers of stone, scattered shrubs, and the quiet stillness of a hillside. But look closer. Much closer.

Hidden in plain sight within this seemingly ordinary scene lies a fascinating wildlife puzzle that has left viewers doing double takes.

Captured at the Nagamalai Hillock Biological Heritage Site in Erode district of Tamil Nadu, this striking photograph by wildlife enthusiast Gowrisankar R. shows nature’s most skilled illusionists, the Indian Rock Eagle Owls.

Perfectly blending into their surroundings, these birds demonstrate camouflage so effective that even trained eyes can miss them at first. The image was shared by Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary Environment Climate Change & Forests, Tamil Nadu on X.

WHAT IS INDIAN ROCK EAGLE OWL?

The Indian Rock Eagle Owl (Bubo bengalensis) is a large, nocturnal owl found across India. It lives in rocky hills and dry forests, using its brown-grey feathers for excellent camouflage.

With bright orange eyes and ear tufts, it hunts small animals at night and plays an important role in maintaining ecological balance.

The rocky terrain, with its earthy tones and jagged textures, acts as the perfect backdrop for the bird.

The owls’ mottled feathers mimic the colours and patterns of the rocks, making them almost indistinguishable from their environment. It’s a survival strategy honed over thousands of years, helping them avoid predators and remain undetected while hunting.

Biological Heritage Sites like Nagamalai play a crucial role in preserving such extraordinary biodiversity. These protected landscapes ensure that species like the Indian Rock Eagle Owl continue to thrive in their natural habitats. Without such conservation efforts, these delicate ecosystems, and the secrets they hold, could easily be lost.

What makes this image particularly captivating is its interactive charm. It invites viewers to pause, scan, and search, turning a simple photograph into a visual treasure hunt. Social media users who’ve seen similar images often report spotting one owl then two and suddenly realising there are more hiding in plain sight.

So, how many did you find?
