How many dead Indian satellites are orbiting Earth? Isro reveals

India has been quietly leaving its mark in space for decades. But not all of it is the kind worth celebrating. A written reply in the Lok Sabha this week revealed just how much clutter Indian space missions have accumulated in orbit over the years, and the numbers are striking.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh, responding to a Parliament question on March 18, 2026, confirmed that a total of 129 trackable pieces of space debris originating from Indian missions are currently in orbit. That includes defunct satellites, spent rocket bodies, and fragments from a broken-up rocket stage.

HOW MANY DEAD SATELLITES DOES INDIA HAVE IN ORBIT?

Of the 129 objects, 49 are defunct satellites. Twenty-three of these are in low Earth orbit (LEO) and 26 are in geostationary Earth orbit (GEO).

The remaining debris includes rocket bodies from PSLV (40), GSLV (4) and LVM3 (3), along with 33 fragments from an in-orbit break-up of a PSLV-C3 rocket body.

WHAT IS SPACE DEBRIS, AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Space debris is any human-made object in orbit that no longer serves a purpose. These include dead satellites, discarded rocket stages, even flecks of paint count.

At orbital speeds of nearly 10 km per second, even a small fragment can destroy a functioning satellite on impact, generating clouds of new fragments that threaten future missions.

HOW IS ISRO PLANNING TO STOP ADDING MORE JUNK IN SPACE?

India’s response to this growing problem is the Debris Free Space Mission (DFSM), announced in 2024. The initiative aims for zero debris creation by all Indian actors, both government and private, by 2030.

Space Debris

As part of this, the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has institutionalised the practice of reserving extra fuel margins for spacecraft and launch vehicles right from the mission design phase, so satellites have enough fuel left to be safely guided out of orbit at the end of their lives.

CAN INDIA REMOVE EXISTING DEBRIS FROM SPACE?

This is where things get genuinely exciting. India’s SpaDeX mission in 2025 demonstrated autonomous docking and undocking in space, a key stepping stone for any future debris removal operation.

Studies are also under way on robotic arms and rendezvous technologies.

Meanwhile, Project Netra, India’s space situational awareness network, operates a control centre that tracks debris and issues collision avoidance alerts to protect active satellites.

The orbital neighbourhood is getting crowded fast. India’s plan to leave zero debris by 2030 is ambitious, but the clock is ticking.
