Artemis 2 astronauts show how they eat mac and cheese in space

Eating in space is not just about survival; it is about bringing a piece of home to the stars. On Sunday, April 5, 2026, Nasa released a fascinating video from the Orion spacecraft, currently on its Artemis II lunar mission.

The footage shows astronauts Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen enjoying a meal while floating in microgravity.

To the relief of many, commander Wiseman confirmed that even on a journey around the Moon, space has mac and cheese.

HOW DO ASTRONAUTS EAT IN MICROGRAVITY?

In a world without “up” or “down,” eating becomes a complex engineering task.

Microgravity refers to the condition where people or objects appear weightless.

Because there is no gravity to keep food on a plate, everything is stored in sealed plastic or metallic pouches.

Christina Koch, who spent nearly a year on the International Space Station (ISS), explained that most meals are rehydrated.

This process involves adding water to dried food so it soaks up the moisture and becomes edible again.

In the video, the crew showed off a shrimp cocktail that had already been “plumped up” and looked surprisingly delicious.

WHY IS CRUMB CONTROL SO IMPORTANT?

You might wonder why astronauts cannot just have a crusty loaf of bread. The reason is safety. In a spacecraft, crumbs do not fall on the floor; they float.

These tiny particles can fly into an astronaut’s eye or, worse, get sucked into delicate equipment and cables, causing a short circuit.

Therefore, food like the spicy green beans and macaroni shown by the Artemis II crew must be stable and “crumb free.”

WHAT IS ON NASA’S ARTEMIS MENU?

Nasa ensures the menu is far from boring. There are 189 unique items, including barbecued beef brisket and mango salad.

These meals are thermostabilised, which means they are heat-treated to destroy harmful bacteria so they stay safe for years without a fridge.

While the mission tests the limits of deep space travel, comfort remains a priority.

As the crew floats past the lunar surface, a warm pouch of cauliflower mac and cheese provides the ultimate psychological boost.
