7.6 magnitude earthquake rocks Tonga: Could it lead to another 2022-like eruption?

A powerful deep-focus earthquake struck near the Pacific island nation of Tonga, with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reporting the quake at a depth of approximately 238 km (148 miles) beneath the Earth’s surface.

The epicenter was located more than 150 km from the town of Neiafu, placing it in a seismically active zone along the Tonga Trench, one of the most dynamic tectonic boundaries in the world.

While no immediate damage or tsunami threat has been reported due to the quake’s considerable depth, scientists say the event is part of a concerning pattern of seismic activity in the region.

MAJOR SEISMIC ACTIVITY

In recent days, the area surrounding Tonga and Samoa has experienced a cluster of significant earthquakes, including a rare sequence of three tremors exceeding magnitude 6.0 in quick succession.

Seismologists are closely monitoring these developments, as such clusters, often referred to as “earthquake swarms,” can sometimes precede larger seismic events.

Although it is not possible to definitively predict earthquakes, experts caution that this sequence could represent foreshock activity, potentially signalling stress accumulation along major fault lines in the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”

“The depth of this latest quake suggests it originated within the subducting Pacific Plate,” researchers note, adding that deep earthquakes are typically less destructive at the surface but can indicate intense geological processes unfolding far below.

Tonga

The heightened attention also stems from the region’s recent geological history.

In January 2022, the nearby Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano unleashed the largest volcanic eruption of the 21st century, generating shockwaves felt around the globe and triggering tsunamis across the Pacific.

That eruption dramatically reshaped parts of Tonga’s landscape and highlighted the volatile nature of the region’s interconnected tectonic and volcanic systems.

Scientists emphasise that while earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are not always directly linked, both are driven by the same underlying tectonic forces.

Tonga

The current uptick in seismic activity has renewed discussions about the potential for larger earthquakes or renewed volcanic unrest in the area.

Authorities in Tonga and neighbouring Pacific nations are continuing to monitor the situation closely. For now, there is no immediate cause for alarm, but experts stress the importance of preparedness in a region where powerful natural events can occur with little warning.

As seismic instruments track ongoing tremors beneath the ocean floor, the Pacific once again points to Earth’s restless and unpredictable nature.
