Modi-Trump Talks Signal Major Trade Deal, Discuss Kashmir & Oil

Key Takeaways

  • PM Modi and President Trump agreed to strengthen the India-US strategic partnership.
  • Discussions covered trade, energy, Kashmir, Afghanistan, and Gulf stability.
  • Trump announced “tremendous progress” towards a “very big” trade deal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held crucial talks on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Biarritz, France, signalling a major push to resolve trade issues and deepen strategic ties.

Strengthening the Strategic Partnership

PM Modi stated that the leaders decided to strengthen the India-US strategic partnership. “We had extensive discussions on the entire gamut of India-US relations. We discussed ways to deepen ties in trade, including manufacturing, energy, and other key sectors,” he said.

Focus on Trade and a “Big Deal”

President Trump highlighted significant progress on trade, hinting at a major agreement. “We are doing very well on trade. We are talking about a very big trade deal. I think it will be a very, very big deal,” Trump said.

The meeting is timely, as both nations work to resolve trade differences. The US seeks lower Indian tariffs, while India wants better market access for its goods in the US.

Discussions on Regional Security

The leaders also addressed key regional security issues:

  • Kashmir: PM Modi explained India’s challenges with cross-border terrorism. Both leaders agreed on the importance of dialogue between India and Pakistan.
  • Afghanistan: They discussed the need for peace, with Trump noting, “We are working together to bring peace to that region.”
  • Gulf & Oil: They talked about ensuring stability in the Gulf region and oil prices, agreeing to cooperate on energy security.

The bilateral meeting took place during the G7 Summit, attended by leaders from the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada.
