Justice Surya Kant has been formally appointed as the next Chief Justice of India, marking a significant transition in the country’s judicial leadership. The announcement came from Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, confirming the President’s constitutional appointment effective November 24, 2025.

Minister Meghwal made the declaration via social media platform X, stating: “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025. I convey my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to him.”

Succession Process

The appointment follows established judicial protocols, with outgoing Chief Justice BR Gavai recommending Justice Kant as his successor. Justice Gavai demits office on November 23, 2025, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.

As per the Memorandum of Procedure governing judicial appointments, the senior-most Supreme Court judge deemed fit for the position is traditionally recommended. Justice Kant, being the senior-most after Justice Gavai, will become India’s 53rd Chief Justice.

Distinguished Career

Born on February 10, 1962, Justice Surya Kant brings over four decades of legal expertise to the position. His impressive career includes serving as Advocate General of Haryana and earning Senior Advocate designation at a relatively young age.

Currently, he holds the position of Visitor at the National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi, and serves as ex officio Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
