Congress Demands Details After Trump Announces India-US Trade Deal
The Indian National Congress has sharply questioned the announcement of a new trade deal between India and the United States, made by President Donald Trump, demanding full transparency from the Modi government.
Key Points:
- Congress leaders demand Prime Minister Narendra Modi reveal the specifics of the deal.
- They question the timing and nature of the announcement, comparing it to Trump’s past “ceasefire” statements.
- President Trump called it a “very big” agreement, highlighting strong bilateral ties.
Congress Questions the Announcement
Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala directly challenged the government, asking the Prime Minister to clarify the deal’s details to the nation. In a Hindi tweet, he drew a parallel with Trump’s previous announcements, stating, “Just like the ceasefire, the announcement of the trade deal was also made by US President Trump. It has been stated that the trade deal is beneficial for America. What is the truth? The prime minister should tell the nation.”
Jairam Ramesh Criticises Communication Pattern
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also criticised the government, noting that the information about the Modi-Trump conversation came from the White House, not New Delhi. He pointed to a pattern of major announcements originating from Washington DC, including on Operation Sindoor and India’s oil purchases from Russia and Venezuela. “What is happening?” he asked on Twitter.
Trump’s Statement on the Deal
President Donald Trump announced the signing of the trade deal at the White House. “We have signed a trade deal with India, a very big deal. We have a tremendous relationship with India, Prime Minister Modi is a friend of mine,” he said.
The Congress’s reaction underscores the political demand for clarity on the terms of the agreement, which could have significant economic implications.
