Assam polls may be held in one phase, voting likely in first week of April: Sources

The Assam Assembly elections may be held in a single phase this time, sources told India Today. In 2021, the Assembly elections for the 126 constituencies in Assam were held in three phases.

The Model Code of Conduct is likely to come into effect in the state in the first week of March.

Sources say the Election Commission may formally announce the election dates between March 4 and March 8.

As per sources, there will be a gap of at least 25 days between the announcement of the poll schedule and the voting day. In that case, polling is likely to be held in the first week of April, between April 3 and April 7.

The BJP has almost finalised its strategy to return to power in the state for a third consecutive term. The party leadership has reached a consensus on three key points.

The election will be fought under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The party has decided to avoid any ambiguity regarding leadership.

The BJP has divided its campaign issues into two categories — illegal infiltration; development schemes of the state and central governments; allegations against the Congress state leadership, especially Gaurav Gogoi; Hindutva; and women’s empowerment are expected to be key themes.

Around 100 local issues at the village, block and district levels have been identified, and work has been undertaken to address them. The party plans to highlight initiatives taken for Anganwadi workers, tea garden labourers and government employees.

The party has indicated that MLAs facing strong anti-incumbency may be denied tickets. Preparations are underway to field 25 to 30 new faces this time.

After the announcement of the poll dates, time has been sought from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for 8 to 10 election rallies.

The party leadership claims that the NDA alliance could win between 90 and 100 seats in the state this time.
