When Jayaram opened up on taking break from Mollywood: Actor did not get a satisfying script; ‘I was waiting’

Mollywood actor Jayaram has often faced criticism from Malayali audiences for taking up smaller roles in other language films. However, his recent performance in Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1 has turned things around, earning him widespread appreciation for his role as King Rajashekara.

Jayaram on why he took a break from Malayalam cinema

Earlier, in a candid conversation with Kerala Kaumudi, Jayaram opened up about why he had been away from Malayalam cinema for over a year and a half. It’s been more than a year and a half since I last did a Malayalam film. Many have been asking why I’ve stayed away, but the truth is simple — I just haven’t come across a script that satisfies me completely,” the actor said.

‘Jayaram says he did other-language films while waiting for a good script

During his break, Jayaram continued acting in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada projects.

“In that gap, I was acting in languages like Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. Those roles were not that of a hero. I did all these while waiting for a good film,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Jayaram’s patience seems to have paid off with Kantara: Chapter 1, which brought him renewed recognition.

Coming to the present, while speaking to Asianet News, Jayaram addressed the perception that he takes up smaller roles in non-Malayalam films. “Out of love for me, Malayalees often say I go to other industries and do small roles. But in big films, when the final output comes out, some roles may appear shorter, though they are substantial characters. In Kantara, that wasn’t the case,” he said.

To reunite with Kalidas Jayaram for ‘Ashakal Aayiram’

Jayaram will soon be sharing the screen with his son Kalidas Jayaram after 22 years in a Malayalam film titled ‘Ashakal Aayiram’, directed by G Prajith. Jayaram’s previous outing in Malayalam was ‘Abraham Ozler’.
