Tripura to launch ‘Nari Adalat’ in 10 panchayats across 8 dists

The Tripura council of ministers has decided to roll out the central govt’s Nari Adalat scheme as a pilot initiative, starting in 10 selected gram panchayats.

Cabinet spokesperson and minister of transport and tourism, Sushanta Chowdhury, said the move is aimed at addressing women’s social issues at the grassroots.

The “Nari Adalat” scheme, an initiative spearheaded by the ministry of social justice and empowerment, is designed as a panchayat-level arbitration forum to address cases of violence, abuse and other atrocities against women, and to facilitate timely police intervention where required.

Chowdhury said each Nari Adalat will have a committee of up to nine members selected for their reputation and standing in the community, tasked with supporting and counselling women facing adversity.

The initiative will be implemented across gram panchayats from all eight districts, with village-level courts set up as local platforms for women seeking justice or dispute resolution.

“Its success is expected to serve as a model for expanding such programs, contributing to societal upliftment through strengthened community involvement and better opportunities for women across Tripura,” Chowdhury said.

He added that the govt also sees the initiative as part of building a stronger support system for students and young people in the state.
