This Indian state still has no railway network. Do you know which?

India has one of the largest railway networks in the world, connecting cities, towns, and remote regions across diverse landscapes. These rail lines form the backbone of travel and trade, reaching almost every part of the country.

However, there is one notable exception, a state that still does not have a single operational railway station. That state is Sikkim.

Sikkim remains the only Indian state without direct railway connectivity. Located in the eastern Himalayas, it is not yet linked to the national rail network. Travellers heading to Sikkim by train must get down at nearby stations in West Bengal, such as New Jalpaiguri (NJP) or Siliguri Junction, and continue the journey by road.

From these points, taxis, shared vehicles, and buses provide access to Gangtok and other parts of the state, making Sikkim unique as all other states have at least some level of railway access.

HOW IS SIKKIM CONNECTED TO THE REST OF INDIA?

Since railways are not available, Sikkim depends mainly on road and air transport for connectivity. Road travel is the most common option, with National Highway 10 connecting Siliguri to Gangtok. Shared taxis and buses operate regularly, and most goods and essential supplies enter the state through road transport.

Air connectivity is available but limited.

Pakyong Airport serves Sikkim with a few flights, while Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal functions as the primary air gateway. Many travellers combine flights to Bagdogra with a road journey to reach Sikkim, and helicopter services also operate occasionally, depending on weather conditions.

WHICH RAILWAY PROJECT WILL CONNECT SIKKIM?

The Sevoke-Rangpo railway line is a major project under construction to connect Sikkim to India’s railway network. The proposed route will span approximately 44–45 km and pass through challenging Himalayan terrain, requiring numerous tunnels and several major bridges across deep valleys and rivers.

Once completed, the line will connect West Bengal to Sikkim, significantly improving accessibility and bringing the state onto India’s railway map for the first time.

HOW WILL RAILWAY CONNECTIVITY BENEFIT SIKKIM?

Railway connectivity is expected to bring significant transformation to Sikkim by improving both accessibility and economic activity. It will make travel easier for tourists visiting Gangtok, enable faster movement of goods and essential supplies, and reduce dependence on landslide-prone highways.

Additionally, it will enhance connectivity for residents and businesses, ensure more reliable access during monsoon disruptions, and strengthen the state’s strategic importance as a border region.

India’s railway network reaches nearly every corner of the country, yet Sikkim remains the only state without railway connectivity.

At present, travellers rely on nearby stations in West Bengal and continue their journey by road or air. However, with the Sevoke-Rangpo railway project underway, Sikkim is set to join India’s railway map soon, ending its status as the country’s last rail-unconnected state.
