RTE admissions begin in Gujarat: 84,000 Class 1 seats available in private schools

The admission process under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the academic year 2026–27 began on Friday across private schools in Gujarat. More than 84,000 seats are available for children from economically weaker sections.

Parents seeking admission for Class 1 must submit online applications by April 17 through the state portal. Admissions will follow the RTE mandate requiring private schools to reserve 25% of seats for eligible children.

The Education Department stated that admissions will cover over 9,700 private schools across Gujarat. Instruction is offered in multiple languages including Gujarati, English, Hindi and Urdu.

Parents must fill out the application form online and upload documents such as the child’s birth certificate, proof of residence, category certificate and Income Tax returns.

If parents do not file returns, a self-declaration stating non-liability to pay income tax must be submitted.

Officials clarified that applicants do not need to submit physical forms after applying but should keep a printout for reference. The state government has raised the annual income eligibility limit to 6 lakh this year to expand the beneficiary pool. Priority will be given to families earning below this threshold.

Preference in admissions will be provided to children under specific categories, including orphans, children with disabilities, child labourers, children of martyred soldiers, and those belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Below Poverty Line and economically weaker sections.

Children must have completed six years of age as of June 1, 2026, to qualify for admission. Younger children will not be considered. During the application, parents are required to select 8 to 10 nearby schools in order of preference. Admissions will be allotted based on this list and seat availability.

Under the RTE provisions, once admitted, the state government will bear the tuition fees up to Class 8. The Education Department advised parents to complete the application process within the deadline to avoid last-minute issues.
