Quote of the Day by Father of Robotics: I can’t define a robot, but I know one when I see one

At a time when machines were only beginning to enter factory floors, Joseph Engelberger, widely regarded as the Father of Robotics, offered a simple yet lasting reflection on the evolving role of intelligent machines. His words came as robots were moving from imagination to industrial reality, marking the start of a technological shift that continues today.

CONTEXT OF THE STATEMENT

Joseph Engelberger made this remark while working to introduce robots into manufacturing. In 1961, he helped deploy Unimate, the world’s first industrial robot, at a General Motors factory in New Jersey.

The robot was used to handle hot metal parts, a task considered dangerous for human workers.

His statement reflected the early stage of robotics, when definitions were still forming, but the impact was already visible.

A PIONEER WHO CHANGED INDUSTRY

Engelberger worked closely with inventor George Devol, who created the original robotic design. Together, they founded Unimation, the first robotics company. Their work introduced automation into factories, transforming manufacturing processes across industries.

Robots soon began performing repetitive and hazardous tasks, improving safety and efficiency.

A BROADER MESSAGE

Engelberger believed robots would not replace humans entirely but would assist them. His vision was of machines working alongside people, helping improve productivity and quality of life.

Today, as robotics and artificial intelligence continue to evolve, Engelberger’s words remain relevant. His work laid the foundation for modern robotics, from factory automation to advanced intelligent machines used across sectors.
