IITian turned monk: Meet Shreesh Jadhav who walked away from a million-dollar career

In an age where success is often measured by salary packages, global careers, and prestige, some rare individuals quietly redefine what achievement truly means.

Shreesh Jadhav is one such person, an IIT rank holder, GATE topper, and PhD scholar who stood on the threshold of a million-dollar future, yet chose a completely different life.

Instead of chasing corporate success, he walked away from it all to become a monk and dedicate his life to education and social service.

His journey is not just unusual; it is a powerful reminder that true success is sometimes found in giving, not gaining.

WHO IS SHREESH JADHAV, AND WHY IS HE SO REMARKABLE?

Born in 1968, Shreesh Jadhav showed extraordinary academic brilliance early in life. In 1985, he secured All India Rank 2 in IIT-JEE and joined IIT Kanpur, where he consistently delivered exceptional academic performance, scoring straight A’s in nearly all subjects.

He later topped GATE in Computer Science with an outstanding 99.92 percentile, placing him among the most promising minds of his generation.

With such credentials, a high-paying global career in technology or research was almost guaranteed. But he had something else in mind.

WHY DID HE GIVE UP A HIGH-PAYING CAREER?

After completing his BTech in 1989 and PhD in 1995, Shreesh Jadhav chose not to pursue corporate or international opportunities. Instead, he joined the Ramakrishna Mission at Belur Math and became a monk, later known as Swami Sarvottamananda.

He explained his decision by saying he had left lesser things for something better, prioritising service and spiritual fulfilment over material success.

He then used his academic expertise to serve society, working as a resident teacher at a Ramakrishna Mission school in Narottamnagar, Arunachal Pradesh.

He later served as an honorary lecturer at Ramakrishna Mission Shilpamandira and eventually became Dean of Research and Coordinator of the Computer Science Department at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University.

DID HE CONTINUE RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC WORK?

Despite choosing a monastic life, his academic contributions remained significant.

His research focused on computational geometry, graph and geometric algorithms, and discrete applied mathematics. His BTech project was even selected by the Association for Computing Machinery, a rare recognition for undergraduate work.

His scholarly work was published in international journals and conferences, and he continued guiding students and contributing to academic development while living a life of simplicity and service.

In recognition of his contributions to society and academia, IIT Kanpur conferred upon him the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2009. He is also regarded as one of the most influential alumni of the institute, a rare honour for someone who chose a path away from conventional success.

WHAT MAKES HIS JOURNEY SO POWERFUL TODAY?

Shreesh Jadhav’s story challenges the conventional definition of achievement. He had the intelligence to build a global career, the credentials to earn wealth, and the opportunities to gain fame, yet he chose to dedicate his life to teaching, service, and spiritual growth.

Instead of building personal success, he built opportunities for others. Instead of chasing recognition, he chose impact. And instead of accumulating wealth, he invested in lives.

A DIFFERENT DEFINITION OF SUCCESS

Shreesh Jadhav’s journey from IIT AIR 2 to monk is not about giving up success; it is about redefining it. He showed that brilliance is most meaningful when used in the service of society, and that fulfilment lies not only in achievement but also in contribution.

In a world that pushes us to chase more, his life quietly asks a powerful question: what if success is not about what we gain, but about what we give away?
