Four IITs, JNU and BITS Pilani among world’s top 50 as per QS subject-wise rankings

India has emerged as one of the strongest performers in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, recording a sharp surge in both institutional presence and subject-wise representation. The latest edition highlights not just expansion, but a significant upward movement in global standings signalling a maturing higher education ecosystem.

According to QS Quacquarelli Symonds, India added 20 new institutions this year, taking the total number of ranked universities to 99.

The country also recorded 120 new subject entries, placing it among the top contributors globally, behind only major education systems like the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

IITS AND DELHI UNIVERSITY DOMINATE SUBJECT PRESENCE

Among Indian institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay leads with the highest number of subject entries. It is followed by the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, University of Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.

This concentration of high-performing institutions underscores the continued dominance of premier public universities, particularly the IIT ecosystem, in driving India’s global academic visibility.

INDIA RECORDS FASTEST IMPROVEMENT AMONG MAJOR SYSTEMS

Beyond the rise in participation, India’s standout achievement lies in its improvement rate. Nearly half of the country’s ranked entries moved up in the rankings this yea, an unmatched performance among large higher education systems.

In total, 265 subject entries improved their positions, compared to just 80 that witnessed a decline. This growth trajectory places India ahead of countries such as the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, and Colombia in terms of ranking progress.

The data reflects a broader shift from mere representation to consistent upward mobility in global rankings.
