Do you know about India’s mango city? Here’s what makes it special

Mango, often called the king of fruits, is found across India in many varieties, each with its own taste and identity. Among the regions known for mango cultivation, one city in West Bengal has built a strong association with the fruit, Malda. Located in the northern part of the state, Malda is widely referred to as India’s mango city.

Mangoes from Malda travel far beyond the district. They are supplied to several parts of the country and also exported to international markets.

The region’s link with mango cultivation is not recent. Historical accounts suggest that the area, which was once part of the Pala kingdom in the early medieval period, had orchards that supported local trade.

Later, under the Bengal Sultanate and Mughal rule, Malda emerged as an important centre for commerce, with mangoes becoming one of its recognised produce.

The geography of the region has played a role in shaping this identity. Situated near the Ganga and Mahananda rivers, Malda has fertile alluvial soil. The climate, marked by warm summers and seasonal rainfall, supports mango cultivation over large areas.

Orchards stretch across the landscape, forming an organised system that has sustained production over generations.

THE REASON FOR MALDA TO GAIN POPULARITY AS INDIA’S MANGO CITY

Malda is known for producing several mango varieties, including Fazli, Langra, Himsagar and Lakshmanbhog. Each of these has its own harvest cycle and market demand. Among them, the Fazli mango is often noted for its size and late-season availability, extending the supply period compared to other regions.

The scale of production is another factor. Large orchards and established farming practices have enabled consistent output. Farmers in the region have continued traditional methods while adapting to changing market needs.

The supply chain, from orchards to local markets and then to other states and export channels, has developed over time.

The taste of Malda mangoes is often linked to the soil and climate conditions of the region. The combination of riverine soil and seasonal weather contributes to the texture and flavour of the fruit. This has helped the district maintain its reputation among traders and consumers.

Malda’s identity as the mango city is therefore not limited to volume alone. It is shaped by history, geography and continuity of cultivation. Even today, the orchards remain central to the local economy, and the fruit continues to define the region’s place on India’s agricultural map.
