17-year-old Kabir Chhillar scores 300/300 in JEE, says clarity beats long hours

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the results for JEE Main 2026, and among the top performers, 12 candidates scored a perfect 100 percentiles.

One of the standout achievers is 17-year-old Kabir Chhillar, who secured a perfect 300 out of 300 in the January session, placing him among the country’s highest scorers.

A regular classroom student in Kota for the past two years, Kabir attributes his success to disciplined preparation, concept clarity, and relentless self analysis.

Originally from Rajasthan, Kabir comes from an academically inclined family.

His father, Mohit Chhillar, is an IITian currently working in a private company, while his mother, Priyanka Chhillar, is a private teacher. Born on July 30, 2008, Kabir had earlier scored 98 percent in his Class 10 board examinations, reflecting his strong academic foundation from an early stage.

WHY IS HARD WORK IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION CRUCIAL?

Speaking to India Today, Kabir emphasised that consistent effort coupled with proper guidance played a decisive role in his achievement.

“Hard work in the right direction is crucial. Simply studying for long hours is not enough. You need to understand what you are doing and why you are doing it,” he said.

Kabir credits his teachers at the Institute for helping him build conceptual clarity.

“Coming to Kota proved to be a turning point for me. After coming here, the concepts of every subject became clear. Instead of memorising formulas or solutions, I focused on understanding concepts in depth,” he shared.

HOW DID KABIR BREAK TOPICS INTO SMALL GOALS?

Kabir followed a structured and disciplined routine over the past two years. He divided each subject into smaller, manageable parts and ensured thorough preparation of every topic.

“I studied each topic by breaking it into small sections. I prepared short notes for quick revision and revised them regularly. Consistency was the key,” he explained.

Mock tests and detailed performance analysis formed a core part of his strategy. Rather than being discouraged by mistakes, Kabir used them as learning tools.

“Analysing my mistakes was very important for me. After every test, I would carefully review where I went wrong. This helped me improve my performance steadily,” he said.

He also worked extensively on time management and accuracy, two factors he believes are critical in a competitive exam like JEE Main.

BALANCING PREPARATION WITH RECREATION

Despite the intense preparation, Kabir ensured he maintained balance.

“For recreation, I go out with my friends. It helps refresh my mind,” he said, adding that mental well-being was important during the rigorous preparation phase.

WHAT ARE KABIR’S ASPIRATIONS AFTER JEE MAIN SUCCESS?

Kabir now aims to pursue Computer Science from IIT Bombay and harbours long-term aspirations of studying at MIT.

“I want to pursue CS from IIT Bombay. In the long run, I would also like to study at MIT,” he shared.

With a perfect score in one of the country’s toughest engineering entrance examinations, Kabir Chhillar’s journey highlights the power of clarity, discipline, and structured self evaluation in turning consistent effort into national level excellence.
