The Housemaid’s Secret, the sequel to last year’s successful thriller The Housemaid, has locked a release date. The original film earned nearly $400 million worldwide on a $35 million budget and became a popular choice during the holiday season despite a modest opening of $19 million.
Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, plans to launch the sequel as counter-programming during the busy Christmas period in 2027. The Housemaid’s Secret will premiere on December 17, 2027, alongside other major releases such as Avengers: Secret Wars and Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Sydney Sweeney returns as Millie, the live-in maid with a dark past, alongside Michele Morrone, who also reprises his role. Kirsten Dunst joins the cast for the sequel, which is based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel. The story follows Millie as she takes a new job caring for a woman she is never allowed to see, only to uncover secrets far darker than her own behind a locked door.

Production for The Housemaid’s Secret is scheduled to begin later this year. Paul Feig returns as director, with Rebecca Sonnenshine adapting the screenplay. The production team includes Feig, Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, Laura Fischer of Pretty Dangerous, and Sydney Sweeney through Fifty-Fifty Films.
Lionsgate aims to develop The Housemaid into a major film franchise. Plans are in place to adapt additional novels by McFadden, including the third book titled The Housemaid Is Watching, in the coming years.
With a strong cast and experienced creative team, The Housemaid’s Secret looks set to build on the success of its predecessor. Fans of the first film and McFadden’s novels can expect a continuation that explores deeper mysteries and darker themes.
