Meryl Streep praised her The Devil Wears Prada 2 co-star Anne Hathaway for taking a firm stand on body image in the much-awaited second part. She ensured that the sequel avoids promoting unhealthy body standards. The veteran actor revealed that Hathaway stepped in to address concerns around how models were being portrayed, earning her admiration on and off set.
Speaking about the experience, Streep shared that attending runway shows during production left her uneasy.
In a conversation with Harper’s Bazaar, Streep said, “I was struck by how not only beautiful and young, everyone seems young to me, but alarmingly thin the models were.”
She added that Hathaway took immediate action after noticing the same issue. “I thought that all had been addressed years ago. Annie clocked it too, and she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal!”
Meryl explained, adding, “She’s a stand-up girl.”
The much-awaited sequel to the 2006 hit has already generated strong buzz, with fans eager to see the return of iconic characters nearly two decades later. However, filming in New York City also brought unexpected challenges, as large crowds and paparazzi closely followed the shoot.
Recalling the atmosphere on set, Streep said that although the team was aware of the first film’s impact two decades ago, they were unprepared for the overwhelming wave of goodwill and intense public attention that surrounded them.
She added that the situation required police barriers and crowd control, with buses of fans arriving and paparazzi swarming the sets, at one point even disrupting shots and getting into a scuffle with the crew. While Anne Hathaway remained calm throughout, Streep admitted that the experience left her feeling unsettled.
Directed by David Frankel, The Devil Wears Prada 2 follows Andy Sachs as she returns to Runway magazine as a Features Editor, crossing paths once again with Miranda Priestly after 20 years. The film also stars Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, along with a wider ensemble cast.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is scheduled to release in theatres on May 1, 2026.
