Anurag Kashyap says ‘Nishaanchi’s’ VFX surpasses Oscar contender ‘Sinners’: ‘ I can very proudly say that…’

‘Sinners’ is one of the strongest contenders at the Academy Awards, earning one Oscar nomination and global attention. The Ryan Coogler directorial has been praised for its scale, performances, and technical craft. Now, Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap compares his latest film ‘Nishaanchi’ to the Hollywood heavyweight ‘Sinners’.

Anurag Kashyap on new filmmaking styles

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kashyap reflected on how filmmaking practices are evolving, especially in South India. He observed a faster, more integrated workflow where shooting and editing happen simultaneously. This approach, he believes, changes the energy on set and the final output. “Working with other filmmakers, I am seeing this new style of working. It is coming in, and it is everywhere in the South. They shoot, and they edit right there… They shoot a scene a day; they don’t do shots,” Kashyap said.

The director hinted that such efficiency allows teams to stay closer to the story’s rhythm. It also reduces the fragmentation that traditional shot-by-shot methods can create.

Aniurag Kashyap on the challenge of a double role

At the heart of ‘Nishaanchi’ lies a technically demanding double role. Newcomer Aaishvary Thackeray plays twin brothers whose lives move in sharply different directions. Kashyap emphasised that the illusion required extensive visual effects and careful planning. “For me, both parts of Nishaanchi, with special effects, with the actor playing two different kinds of a double role, which I am very proud of, what Sylvester and Red Chillies have achieved. I can very proudly say that it is better than Sinners. They are really two different people, and we shot two months apart. It was not like. ‘Change your shirt and come. ’ It was all real,” he added.

About ‘Nishaanchi’

‘Nishaanchi’ marks Kashyap’s return to the crime space that defined his earlier career. The story follows twin brothers Babloo and Dabloo as they spiral into a world of violence, love, and revenge. The film features an ensemble cast including Vedika Pinto, Monika Panwar, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Kumud Mishra. The film is backed by Ajay Rai and Ranjan Singh.
