Colleague Arrested for Murder After Setting Woman Ablaze in Madurai

Police have arrested a man for the murder of his female colleague, revealing a case initially mistaken for a tragic fire accident. The victim, S Subbulakshmi, was set on fire by Suresh Kumar after she rejected his marriage proposal.

From Fire Accident to Murder Investigation

S Subbulakshmi, a 28-year-old computer operator, was found dead with burn injuries on the terrace of the LIC building in Madurai on February 23. Initially, authorities believed her death was linked to a fire that broke out in the building.

However, the investigation took a grim turn. Police discovered that Subbulakshmi was murdered by her 32-year-old colleague, Suresh Kumar, who also worked as a computer operator.

Motivation: One-Sided Love and Rejection

According to police, Suresh Kumar had developed a one-sided affection for Subbulakshmi and had previously proposed to her, only to be rejected.

On the day of the incident, he called her to the building’s terrace and proposed again. When she refused once more, he poured petrol on her and set her on fire.

Attempt to Destroy Evidence

After the murder, Suresh Kumar allegedly set fire to parts of the building in an attempt to destroy evidence and disguise the crime as an accident. He then fled the scene.

Arrest and Charges

The Madurai police tracked down Suresh Kumar to a hideout in Chennai and arrested him on Sunday. He has been formally charged with murder and arson.

The case highlights a premeditated crime of passion, brutally ending the life of a young woman and shocking the local community.
