Dhanteras Trade Hits Record Rs 1 Lakh Crore with Gold Boom

Dhanteras Trade Crosses Rs 1 Lakh Crore Mark

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) reports that Dhanteras 2024 generated over Rs 1 lakh crore in nationwide trade, with gold and silver sales alone exceeding Rs 60,000 crore.

Key Takeaways

  • Total Dhanteras trade crosses Rs 1 lakh crore nationwide
  • Gold and silver sales exceed Rs 60,000 crore
  • Delhi’s bullion markets see 25% growth with Rs 10,000 crore sales
  • Multiple sectors report record-breaking festive sales

Festive Shopping Trends

Dhanteras holds special significance as Indians traditionally purchase items symbolizing prosperity. This includes gold, silver, utensils, kitchenware, vehicles, brooms, electronic goods, and puja materials.

CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal confirmed: “The total business on Dhanteras, including gold, silver, and other auspicious items, is estimated to have crossed Rs 1 lakh crore across the country.”

Gold and Silver Market Performance

According to Pankaj Arora, National President of CAIT’s jewellery chapter: “The past two days have seen an unprecedented rush in jewellery markets. As per preliminary estimates, the gold and silver trade alone exceeded Rs 60,000 crore, while Delhi’s bullion markets recorded sales worth over Rs 10,000 crore, marking a 25 per cent rise compared to last year.”

Despite significant price increases – gold rising 60% to Rs 1,30,000 per 10 grams and silver up 55% to Rs 1,80,000 per kilogram – consumers continued buying these metals as secure investments.

Sector-wise Sales Breakdown

  • Utensils & Kitchenware/Appliances: Rs 15,000 crore
  • Electronic & Electrical Goods: Rs 10,000 crore
  • Decorative Items, Lamps & Puja Materials: Rs 3,000 crore
  • Dry Fruits, Sweets, Fruits, Textiles, Vehicles & Miscellaneous: Rs 12,000 crore

Driving Factors

The record trade is attributed to GST rate reductions and the impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Swadeshi Aapnao” campaign. Consumers showed clear preference for locally made Indian products, benefiting small traders, artisans, and manufacturers nationwide.
