India Sets Minimum Import Price for Sulphadiazine API
India has imposed a minimum import price (MIP) of ₹1,774 per kg on Sulphadiazine active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), restricting cheaper imports until September 2026. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) announced this immediate measure through an October 10 notification to regulate the import of this anti-bacterial drug component.
Key Policy Details
The new regulation states that imports of Sulphadiazine API with a CIF value below ₹1,774 per kilogram are now prohibited. This restriction will remain in effect until September 30, 2026.
Exemptions and Conditions
The MIP requirement does not apply to:
- Advance Authorization holders
- Export oriented units
- Special economic zone units
However, these exempted entities must ensure the imported API is not sold in the domestic tariff area (DTA).
Background and Consultations
Before implementing this decision, the DGFT conducted stakeholder consultations to review the proposal’s impact. The Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council of India had informed its members about a September 18 meeting to discuss the proposed MIP on the API.
