Iran-US war impact may push up medicine prices in India

The ongoing Iran–Israel–US conflict is beginning to affect India’s medicine supply, raising concerns over a possible rise in prices in the coming weeks. Traders and industry representatives say the impact is already visible at the wholesale level.

At Bhagirathi Palace Market in Delhi, one of the country’s key wholesale hubs for medicines, traders say the pressure is building. Ashish Grover, president of the Delhi Drug Traders Association, said rising input costs are starting to affect the entire supply chain.

He explained that much of the raw material used to make medicines is imported. With global disruptions, the cost of materials like aluminium and plastic has gone up. This has made packaging more expensive, which is pushing up the overall cost of medicines.

COMMON MEDICINES MAY BE AFFECTED

The impact is not limited to specialised drugs. Common medicines such as Paracetamol, Amoxicillin, Metformin and Azithromycin are also likely to see changes in pricing and supply.

These are widely used for treating fever, diabetes, infections and respiratory illnesses, and are taken daily by millions across the country.

STOCK AVAILABLE, BUT CONCERNS AHEAD

For now, traders say there is enough stock available in the market. However, they warn that the real impact may be felt in the coming days if the situation does not improve.

Pharma industry bodies have already raised the issue with the government, sending an emergency report highlighting the risk to raw material supplies.

With global tensions affecting supply chains, the ripple effect is now reaching India’s healthcare sector. If disruptions continue, both availability and prices of essential medicines could come under further pressure.
