India opens OALP-XI, offers 21 blocks to boost oil and gas exploration

India has opened a new round of oil and gas exploration, aiming to boost domestic energy production. The government has launched the 11th round of the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP), offering 21 blocks spread across nearly 80,228 square kilometres.

A PUSH FOR ENERGY SECURITY

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri described the launch as a significant step forward. He said OALP-XI marks “a new chapter in India’s energy journey”, highlighting the country’s focus on strengthening energy security and reducing dependence on imports.

He also said that when combined with OALP-10, the total area opened up for exploration now stands at around 262,817 square kilometres.

The previous round, OALP-10, had offered about 25 blocks covering 182,589 square kilometres. With the addition of OALP-XI, the government is expanding exploration opportunities across both land and offshore areas.

In a post on X, Puri said the move is aimed at unlocking “vast frontiers beneath our land and seas” and supporting growth, resilience and self-reliance. He added that the effort aligns with the government’s broader vision to fast-track bidding and expand exploration activity.

BID TIMELINE ANNOUNCED

The government has also shared the timeline for bidding. The submission process will begin on March 30, 2026, at 2:00 pm IST, and will close on May 29, 2026, at 12:00 pm IST.

With this new round, India continues its efforts to tap into its untapped energy resources and attract more participation in the exploration sector.
