India-EU Trade Deal Sends Message That Cooperation is Key: Ursula

India-EU Trade Deal Aims to Show Cooperation is Key, Says Ursula von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the ongoing India-EU trade agreement negotiations will send a powerful global message: cooperation is the best response to worldwide challenges.

Key Partnership Details

In a video address to the CII India Europe Business and Sustainability Conclave, von der Leyen highlighted the EU’s position as India’s second-largest trading partner and third-largest investor.

“We are working on a trade deal that will send a strong message that cooperation is the best answer to global challenges,” she said.

Shared Democratic Values

She described the EU and India as “natural partners,” united by shared principles.

“We are vibrant democracies, we are both committed to a rules-based international order. We believe in the spirit of partnership and cooperation,” she said.

Collaboration Across Sectors

The collaboration extends beyond trade to critical areas like:

  • Climate change and sustainability
  • Digital transition
  • Global health
  • Security and defence

“We are also working together to make sure that the global economy is more resilient and more sustainable,” von der Leyen added.

Focus on Global Goals

The EU is committed to partnering with India to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and ensure an inclusive, sustainable post-pandemic recovery.

On geopolitics, she noted, “We are also working together to promote peace and stability in the region and beyond.”

Looking Ahead to India’s G20 Presidency

Von der Leyen expressed confidence in India’s upcoming G20 presidency, stating the EU looks forward to working together.

“We are confident that India will provide strong leadership and help us to address the global challenges we face,” she concluded.
