Adani Reveals How Hindenburg Report Wiped $100 Billion in Market Value

Key Takeaways

  • Gautam Adani reveals how Hindenburg report wiped $100 billion from Adani Group market value
  • SEBI cleared Adani Group of all allegations after investigation
  • Adani emphasizes importance of controlling narratives in global business

Gautam Adani has revealed how a “false script” by Hindenburg Research erased $100 billion from his group’s market value within days, while speaking at Whistling Woods International Institute. The Adani Group chairman described the January 2023 report as a “calculated attack” that triggered massive stock crashes despite no fundamental changes in business operations.

The $100 Billion Market Crash

Adani stated that Hindenburg Research’s allegations of stock manipulation and accounting fraud were designed to “provoke doubt” among investors. “It was not just a report, but a manipulated script,” he emphasized. The resulting sell-off wiped out over $100 billion in market capitalization, demonstrating how quickly narratives can influence financial markets.

SEBI’s Clean Chit and Recovery

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) later cleared the Adani Group of all wrongdoing. The regulator confirmed that inter-company transactions were not fraudulent and there was no diversion of funds. “All the money had been returned with interest before the investigation began,” Adani noted, adding that the group has now “reclaimed the narrative.”

Power of Storytelling in Modern Business

Adani described the episode as a crucial lesson about narrative control. “Narratives are no longer limited to cinema. They move markets, shape geopolitics, and even rewrite destinies,” he observed. He warned that false stories, when amplified globally, can destroy years of hard work in just a few headlines.

From Silence to Self-Representation

Reflecting on his personal journey, Adani said films like Don and Zanjeer inspired his entrepreneurial spirit. He urged India to take charge of its global image through cinema, storytelling, and technology. “If we do not narrate who we are, others will rewrite who we were,” he asserted, calling on Indians to define their own identity on the world stage.
