EU Leaders Visit India to Revive Stalled Free Trade Agreement

EU Leaders Head to India to Revive Stalled Mega Trade Deal

Top European Union leaders will visit India next week for a high-stakes summit aimed at breaking the deadlock on a long-pending free trade agreement. The talks, stalled since 2013, are getting a fresh push amid global economic shifts.

Key Details of the Summit

The summit is scheduled for January 29-30. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian officials.

What is the India-EU BTIA?

The India-EU Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA) negotiations began in 2007 but were suspended in 2013. The stalemate has been over critical issues like:

  • Market access for goods and services
  • Tariff reductions
  • Data security regulations

A senior EU official stated: “The upcoming summit is a crucial opportunity to inject fresh momentum into the trade talks. We are hopeful of making significant progress.”

Core Sticking Points

The two sides have key demands on the table:

  • India seeks greater market access for its professionals in the EU.
  • The EU wants India to lower tariffs on automobiles, wine, and dairy products, and to strengthen intellectual property rights.

Broader Agenda

Beyond trade, the summit is expected to cover cooperation on climate change, digital partnerships, and connectivity initiatives, reflecting the wider strategic relationship.
