EU-India Free Trade Deal Nears Completion, Says Von der Leyen at Davos
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the European Union is on the verge of finalising a landmark free trade agreement (FTA) with India. The announcement was part of a broader rejection of protectionism and isolationism by global leaders at the forum.
Key Announcement on Trade
Speaking at the WEF annual meeting, von der Leyen stated, “We are close to concluding a free trade agreement with India. I think this deal would have a great potential for both of us.” This FTA is seen as a major economic and strategic move for both blocs.
Expanding the Partnership
Beyond the trade deal, the EU is actively working on a comprehensive investment agreement with India. “We are also working on an investment agreement with India. This is a very important agreement for us,” she added.
A Multi-Faceted Strategic Relationship
President von der Leyen outlined an extensive and ambitious partnership agenda spanning numerous critical sectors, signalling a deep and wide-ranging collaboration. The EU is pursuing partnerships with India in:
- Digital & Technology: Digital partnership, cyber security, data protection, and space cooperation.
- Security & Governance: Security, counter-terrorism, rule of law, good governance, and anti-corruption.
- Sustainability & Infrastructure: Green partnership, climate action, energy, transport, and maritime cooperation.
- Economic & Social Sectors: Research & innovation, health, education, agriculture, tourism, and customs facilitation.
- Human Rights & Social Inclusion: Partnerships focused on human rights, democracy, gender equality, youth, and support for victims across various societal challenges.
For each area, von der Leyen emphasised its importance, repeatedly stating, “This is a very important partnership for us.”
The sweeping scope of proposed collaborations, from trade and security to social justice and victim support, underscores the EU’s intent to build one of its most significant and multifaceted global relationships with India .
