Amazon Lays Off 16,000 More, India Staff Impacted | Total Hits 27,000

Amazon Cuts 16,000 More Jobs, India Employees Affected

Amazon is laying off another 16,000 employees, with staff in India among those impacted, according to a Business Insider report. This latest round brings the e-commerce giant’s total job cuts this year to a staggering 27,000.

Key Details of the Latest Layoffs

  • Scale: 16,000 employees affected in the latest round.
  • Total 2023 Cuts: 27,000 jobs eliminated after January’s 18,000 layoffs.
  • Departments Hit: Amazon Web Services (AWS), People Experience and Technology (PXT), advertising, and Twitch.
  • Global Impact: Employees in India are confirmed to be among those affected, though specific numbers are not disclosed.

CEO Andy Jassy’s Announcement

The cuts are part of the 9,000-job reduction plan CEO Andy Jassy announced in March. In a note to staff, he framed it as a necessary step for the company’s future.

“As we’ve just concluded the second phase of our operating plan this past week, I’m writing to share that we intend to eliminate about 9,000 more positions in the next few weeks—mostly in AWS, PXT, Advertising, and Twitch,” Jassy said.

“This was a difficult decision, but one that we think is best for the company long term,” he added.

Broader Cost-Cutting and Industry Trend

Amazon’s move comes amid slowing sales growth and economic uncertainty. The company has been shutting down non-core businesses like Amazon Care and Amazon Fabric as part of a wider cost-cutting drive.

This is not an isolated event. The tech industry is witnessing a major correction, with giants like , Google, and Microsoft also announcing significant workforce reductions in recent months.
