8th Pay Commission WhatsApp scam alert: How employees can stay safe

A new cyber scam is making the rounds, and it is specifically targeting central government employees, reported The Economic Times. Fraudsters are promising a quick preview of salary hikes under the upcoming 8th Pay Commission salary revision, but clicking that link could empty bank accounts instead.

The government has issued a public warning after several employees reported suspicious WhatsApp messages linked to the 8th Pay Commission.

FAKE SALARY HIKE MESSAGES CIRCULATING ON WHATSAPP

According to an alert shared on X, scammers are sending WhatsApp messages that claim to calculate an employee’s estimated revised salary under the 8th Pay Commission.

These messages ask users to click a link and download an APK file. At first glance, it may look like a harmless salary calculator. In reality, it is malicious software.

Once the APK file is installed, fraudsters gain remote access to the victim’s mobile phone. This access allows them to steal sensitive data and carry out unauthorised bank transactions.

WHY THIS SCAM IS DANGEROUS

The 8th Pay Commission matters to more than one crore central government employees and pensioners. It directly affects salaries, pensions and overall financial security. Scammers are exploiting this interest and curiosity to trick people into lowering their guard.

Officials warn that once the malicious app is installed, victims may not immediately realise their phone has been compromised. By the time unusual activity is noticed, money may already have been withdrawn from linked bank accounts.

KEY SAFETY ADVICE FOR GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES

Authorities have shared a few simple but important precautions for government employees. They stress that the government never sends APK files through WhatsApp or any other messaging apps.

Employees should avoid downloading files or apps from unknown or unverified sources and must not click on suspicious links, even if a message appears official. For any information related to salary or pension, only official government websites should be used.

OFFICIAL 8TH PAY COMMISSION WEBSITE NOW LIVE

The government has launched the official website of the 8th Pay Commission to provide accurate information and collect feedback. The commission has invited suggestions and comments on pay, allowances and service conditions from ministries, departments, state governments, employees, pensioners, researchers and other stakeholders.

Officials say using the official website is the safest way to stay updated and avoid falling victim to online fraud.

STAY ALERT, STAY SAFE

Cyber experts say scams are becoming more targeted and convincing. Messages that promise financial benefits or urgent updates are often designed to trigger quick reactions.

Employees are encouraged to pause, verify and think before clicking any unknown link. A few seconds of caution can prevent serious financial loss.
