8th Pay Commission timeline out: Here’s what employees can expect next

If you’re a central government employee or pensioner waiting for updates on the 8th Pay Commission, here’s where things stand. The government has now shared fresh details in Parliament, giving a clearer picture of what to expect and when.

The Ministry of Finance has informed the Lok Sabha about key developments related to the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC). These include proposed changes in pay scales, salaries, allowances and pension structures.

REPORT EXPECTED WITHIN 18 MONTHS

In a written reply, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that the government set up the 8th Pay Commission on November 3, 2025, and expects its recommendations within 18 months.

“Government has already notified the constitution of the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) along-with its Terms of Reference (ToR) vide Resolution dated 03.11.2025. As per Resolution dated 03.11.2025, Commission will make its recommendations within 18 months of its constitution,” mentioned the written reply.

Further, these recommendations will cover important areas such as salaries, pensions, and allowances for central government employees. However, the actual financial impact on the Union Budget will only be known after the government reviews and accepts the proposals.

The commission has already started functioning from its office in New Delhi. It currently has three members handling the work.

Ranjana Prakash Desai has been appointed as the chairperson. Pulak Ghosh is serving as a part-time member, while Pankaj Jain is the member secretary.

The commission is also in the process of hiring more staff for various roles, including senior administrative positions.

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR PUBLIC FEEDBACK

In a related move, the government has extended the deadline for submitting responses to the 8th Pay Commission’s 18-point questionnaire. The new last date is March 31, 2026, giving more time to stakeholders to share their views.

Earlier, the deadline was March 16.

All responses must be submitted through the MyGov portal. The government has made it clear that submissions sent via email, post or PDF will not be accepted. It must be mentioned that this feedback is expected to play an important role in shaping the final recommendations of the commission.

For now, while the process is still underway, the focus remains on gathering inputs and preparing a roadmap that could impact lakhs of employees and pensioners across the country.
