Maruti Suzuki leads February car sales as Tata edges Mahindra in close race

India’s leading carmakers reported a strong set of numbers for February 2026. While some brands saw near-flat volumes in the home market, overseas shipments delivered impressive year-on-year gains, underlining India’s growing stature as a global manufacturing hub.

Maruti Suzuki India Limited: Exports power overall performance

India’s largest carmaker reported passenger vehicle (PV) sales of 1,61,000 units in February 2026, marginally higher than 1,60,791 units in the corresponding month last year, indicating largely stable domestic demand.

However, exports stood out as the key growth engine. The company shipped 39,155 units overseas during the month, a sharp jump from 25,021 units exported in February 2025, marking a robust year-on-year growth of over 56 per cent.

Tata Motors: Strong domestic surge

Tata Motors continued its growth trajectory, driven by sustained demand for its SUV-heavy portfolio. Domestic passenger vehicle sales rose to 62,329 units in February 2026, compared to 46,435 units in the same month last year, reflecting double-digit growth.

The company’s international business delivered an even sharper upswing. Exports climbed to 1,002 units from 376 units in February 2025, translating to a 167 per cent year-on-year increase. The performance underscores the growing global traction for Tata’s design-led and safety-focused offerings.

Mahindra: SUVs maintain momentum

Mahindra maintained its dominance in the Sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment. The company sold 60,018 UVs in the domestic market in February, registering a 19 per cent increase over the same month last year.

Including exports, Mahindra’s total SUV sales stood at 60,685 units for the month. The sustained growth reflects continued demand for its SUV lineup, which has remained a key volume driver in the competitive SUV space.

Hyundai: Highest-ever February sales

Hyundai Motor India recorded its highest-ever total sales for the month of February since commencing operations in the country. Domestic sales rose to 52,407 units, up 9.8 per cent year-on-year, marking the brand’s strongest February domestic tally.

Exports further bolstered performance, contributing 13,727 units and registering a sharp 24.8 per cent year-on-year growth.

Toyota: Healthy gains in February

Toyota also reported healthy gains for the month. Domestic sales increased 16 per cent year-on-year to 30,737 units, compared to 26,414 units in February 2025.

Exports witnessed an even steeper rise, growing 65 per cent to 3,297 units from 2,000 units a year ago. The sharp export growth reflects strengthening global demand for Toyota’s India-manufactured models.
