Shahid Afridi slams son-in-law Shaheen after T20 World Cup exit: Repeats same mistakes

Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi didn’t spare his son-in-law, Shaheen Afridi from criticism as he slammed the left-arm pacer after the team’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2026. Afridi said that Shaheen was repeating the same mistakes for which he was criticised earlier on in his career. Shaheen didn’t have the best of times during the tournament, where Pakistan exited after their final Super 8 game against Sri Lanka.

The left-arm pacer picked up eight wickets in five matches but had an economy rate of 10.52. Pakistan needed to restrict Sri Lanka in their final game to 147 after scoring 212 runs in the first innings to retain a chance of making to the semi-finals. However, the Pakistan bowlers were way off the mark with Shaheen conceding 48 runs in his four overs.

He bowled the final over and conceded 22 runs as Pakistan won the match by just five runs. Speaking to Samaa TV, Afridi asked if the left-arm pacer had forgotten to bowl a death over despite the experience he has.

“He (Shaheen Afridi) has been playing for some time now. You don’t know from where you have to bowl the last over. He has been told many times, he should know these things by now. He has been repeating his old mistakes again and again,” Afridi said on Samaa TV.

‘PAKISTAN TEAM DON’T LEARN’

Afridi was left surprised seeing Shaheen bowl from round the wicket against Dasun Shanaka, who hit him for a boundary and three back-to-back sixes in the final over. The Pakistan legend slammed the strategy from Shaheen and claimed that the Pakistan side doesn’t want to learn from their mistakes.

“When a right-hander is batting, you can’t bowl from round the wicket. If one still wants to bowl from that angle, a left-armer has to bowl at the stumps. When the third-man and point fielders are inside the circle, you can’t bowl wide yorkers. This angle becomes an easy one for batters to hit on Asian pitches. If you had bowled from over the wicket, it would have been difficult for batters to hit a six. I don’t know when these guys will learn. They don’t learn, nor do they want to learn,” said Afridi.

Shaheen and the Pakistan players are set to be penalised by the Pakistan cricket board for their poor performance at the T20 World Cup 2026, where they were only able to beat one full-member team.
