Sensex ends 283 points higher, Nifty above 25,800; IT stocks bleed

Benchmark stock market indices closed higher on Wednesday, fuelled by a rise in metal and PSU banking shares but IT stocks bled through the day, limiting the gains on Dalal Street.

The S&P BSE Sensex added 283.29 points to close at 83,734.25, while the NSE Nifty50 was up 93.95 points to end at 25,819.35.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said that markets witnessed a late surge driven by broadbased buying after a cautious start, as positive domestic sectoral cues helped offset lingering global uncertainties.

“Banking and financial stocks remained resilient on the back of steady assetquality expectations, while selective buying in FMCG names contributed to relative outperformance. In contrast, the IT sector continued to lag, weighed down by concerns over AIled disruption and margin pressures, which kept investor sentiment subdued,” he added.

After the closing bell, Tata Steel Ltd led the Sensex gainers, rising 2.83%. It was followed by ITC Ltd, which gained 2.24%. Axis Bank Ltd moved up 1.51%, while Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd added 1.49%. Reliance Industries Ltd also ended higher, rising 1.22%.

Tech Mahindra Ltd saw the sharpest fall, dropping 1.58%. Eternal Ltd declined 1.56%, Infosys Ltd was down 1.37%, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd slipped 1.20%, and HCL Technologies Ltd fell 1.16%.

“On the earnings front, Q3 FY26 results for the Nifty 500 were broadly in line with expectations, underscoring that while growth trends remain mixed, the domestic macro environment continues to offer mediumterm stability,” said Nair.
