Delhi University clamps down on protests, imposes one-month campus-wide ban from February 17

The University of Delhi has banned all public meetings, rallies, demonstrations, and protests on the campus on a one-month basis. The office of the Proctor issued the order, and it came into force on February 17, 2026, according to ANI.

The order covers all students, faculty, and staff. The authorities at the universities have said that the move was done to ensure that there is law and order and that educational activities go on as usual.

Order taken on law and order matters

As it was indicated in the official notice, the administration got a clue that the free assemblies and processions on campus could cause traffic jams, endanger their safety, and create havoc in the peace of the people.

The order emphasizes that previous cases of demonstrations have sometimes gone out of control, giving the campus officials a difficult time.

In order to avoid these cases and maintain the peaceful atmosphere, the university has chosen to ban such activities temporarily.

Police orders mentioned in the notice

An order of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sub-Division Civil Lines, has also been cited by the university. The police directive has provisions of restriction in bare forms of notifications by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

The order has banned the following activities:

  • Conduction of open meetings, rallies, dharnas, protests, or agitations.

  • Gathering of five or more individuals.

  • Transporting explosive items like mashals, beacons, or torches.

  • Making noise or participating in other activities that can disrupt the peace or traffic of the people.

  • Screaming slogans or making speeches.

These measures are supposed to be taken to maintain safety and no degradation of law and order in the campus.

Order to remain in force for one month

The notice clearly states that the prohibition will remain in force for one month from February 17, 2026, unless withdrawn earlier. The administration has said that the order has been issued with the approval of the competent authority.

University members have been advised to follow the instructions strictly during the enforcement period to avoid disciplinary or legal action.
