US F-35 Shoots Down Iranian Drone Near Aircraft Carrier in Tense Standoff

US Navy Downs Iranian Drone Near Carrier in Arabian Sea

A US Navy F-35 fighter jet shot down an Iranian Shahed-136 drone near the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea on Thursday. The Pentagon confirmed the incident, stating the drone was destroyed after ignoring repeated warnings.

Key Details of the Incident

  • Location: Arabian Sea, near the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group.
  • Drone: Iranian-made Shahed-136 UAV, a model also supplied to Russia.
  • Action: Drone approached within 1,000 yards of the carrier and ignored verbal warnings and warning shots.
  • Weapon Used: US Navy employed a Sea Sparrow missile to intercept the drone.

“The drone was shot down in self-defense after it repeatedly ignored verbal warnings and warning shots,” the statement from US Central Command said.

Rising Tensions in the Region

The confrontation occurs against a backdrop of heightened US-Iranian military activity in the Arabian Sea. The US has accused Iran of harassing its ships and aircraft and links it to attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman—allegations Tehran denies.

Iran has been boosting its own military drills in the area, while the US maintains a significant presence with the Lincoln-led strike group.

History of Confrontations

This is the latest in a series of dangerous encounters:

  • 2019: US forces downed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • 2020: The US drone strike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani triggered major retaliatory attacks.

Impact on Nuclear Talks

The incident threatens to further stall already fragile indirect talks in Vienna aimed at reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Negotiations have been deadlocked for months, and this escalation adds a new layer of complexity to diplomatic efforts.
