Budget 2024: India Launches Rs 10,000 Crore National AI Mission

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a massive push for Artificial Intelligence in the Union Budget, unveiling a Rs 10,000 crore corpus for a new National AI Mission. The move aims to position India at the forefront of the global technological revolution.

Key Announcements

  • National AI Mission: A dedicated mission to promote AI research and development.
  • Rs 10,000 Crore Corpus: Funding for AI startups and research projects.
  • Regulatory Sandbox: For emerging tech like blockchain, quantum computing, and robotics.
  • Digital Infrastructure Boost: Expansion of 5G networks and a national digital library.

AI to Solve Pressing National Challenges

Presenting the Budget, Sitharaman stated that AI has the potential to transform India. “AI has the potential to solve some of the most pressing challenges facing our country, from healthcare and agriculture to education and infrastructure,” she said.

The substantial funding is earmarked specifically to fuel innovation in the AI sector, supporting both entrepreneurial ventures and academic research.

Beyond AI: A Broader Tech Push

The government’s vision extends beyond AI. Sitharaman highlighted the strategic importance of blockchain, quantum computing, and robotics. To foster innovation in these fields, a regulatory sandbox will be established to allow for controlled experimentation.

“We are on the cusp of a technological revolution and India must be at the forefront of it,” Sitharaman said.

Focus on Inclusive Digital Growth

The Budget’s technology focus is firmly rooted in inclusive growth. The parallel push on digital infrastructure, like 5G and a digital library, is designed to bridge access gaps.

Sitharaman emphasized that the goal is to ensure equitable access. “We want to ensure that the benefits of technology reach every corner of the country and every section of society,” she affirmed. This dual strategy of funding cutting-edge research while strengthening foundational digital networks aims to create a more inclusive and prosperous society.
