10 Killed in Coordinated Attacks in Pakistan’s Balochistan Province

At Least 10 Killed in Coordinated Attacks Across Pakistan’s Balochistan

At least ten people, including a police officer, were killed in two separate attacks in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province on Monday. The violence highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region, which is crucial to a major Chinese infrastructure project.

Key Details of the Attacks

  • Quetta Attack: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a vehicle in the Killi Almas area of the provincial capital, killing nine people and injuring three others.
  • Hazara Community Targeted: Senior police officer Shafqat Cheema confirmed the vehicle was carrying members of the Hazara community, a Shia Muslim minority frequently targeted by Sunni militant groups.
  • Gwadar Attack: In a separate incident in the port city of Gwadar, a policeman was killed and two others were injured in a gun attack.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the coordinated assaults.

Background: The Balochistan Insurgency

Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest but poorest province, has been gripped by a low-level separatist insurgency for decades. Militant groups demand greater autonomy and a larger share of the region’s natural resources.

Strategic Importance: The CPEC Factor

The province forms a key route for the multi-billion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative. The persistent instability poses a significant challenge to this strategic investment.
