Chinese authorities executed 11 members of a single family on Monday for crimes including homicide, fraud, and running illegal gambling dens. The Supreme People’s Court approved the death sentences for the Zhang family, convicted of leading a mafia-style gang in Henan province.
Key Details of the Case
State-run Xinhua news agency reported the family was found guilty of “organizing and leading a mafia-style gang.” Their criminal activities included “intentional homicide, fraud, running gambling dens, and other criminal activities.” The executions were carried out after a final judicial review.
China’s Use of Capital Punishment
China maintains one of the world’s highest execution rates, with thousands put to death annually for various crimes. While human rights organizations criticize the system’s lack of transparency and due process, authorities defend capital punishment as essential for social stability and fighting serious crime.
