In a significant diplomatic gesture, the US states of Washington, Texas, and Utah have formally recognised 26 January as India’s Republic Day. The move underscores the deepening strategic partnership between the United States and the world’s largest democracy.
Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed the official proclamation on 24 January, designating 26 January 2025 as ‘Republic Day of India’ in the state. The document was presented to the Consul General of India in Seattle, Dr. K. Srikar Reddy.
“The State of Washington and India share a strong and vibrant relationship, with extensive cooperation in trade, education, technology, and culture,” the proclamation read.
“The State of Washington is home to a thriving Indian-American community that contributes significantly to the state’s economy, culture, and social fabric,” it added.
Honouring a Historic Day
The proclamation noted the significance of 26 January, which marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950 and India’s transition to a sovereign republic. It encouraged all people in Washington to observe the day.
“Now, therefore, I, Jay Inslee, Governor of the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim January 26, 2025, as Republic Day of India in the state of Washington, and I encourage all people in our state to observe this day,” it added.
Texas and Utah Join In
Governors Greg Abbott of Texas and Spencer Cox of Utah issued similar proclamations, creating a tri-state recognition of India’s national day.
In his proclamation, Governor Abbott said, “India stands as a beacon of democracy and a key strategic partner of the United States.”
“The Indian-American community in Texas has played a pivotal role in strengthening the bonds between our state and India, contributing to our shared prosperity and cultural richness,” he added.
Governor Cox, in his proclamation, said, “The state of Utah is proud to recognize the Republic Day of India and the enduring friendship between our state and the people of India.”
