Russia Hits Ukraine with 370 Drones, Missiles; Strikes Negotiation Site

Russia Launches Massive Overnight Barrage on Ukraine

Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Ukraine involving 370 drones, 21 missiles, and 14 aircraft, according to the Ukrainian air force. The strikes reportedly targeted a symbolic location in Odesa where Ukraine and Turkey held key grain corridor talks in 2022.

Key Points

  • Ukrainian air defences intercepted 32 Shahed drones, 2 Iskander-K cruise missiles, and 2 Kh-59 guided missiles.
  • The attack hit a site in southern Odesa region historically used for Ukraine-Turkey negotiations.
  • Russia has intensified long-range strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure this year.
  • Moscow claims the attacks are retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy facilities.

Details of the Attack

The Ukrainian air force stated the overnight barrage involved hundreds of aerial weapons. Their defence systems managed to destroy a significant number of incoming threats, including 32 Iranian-made Shahed drones.

In a statement on Telegram, the air force condemned the strike’s location: “The enemy cynically struck at the very place where in 2022 the Ukrainian and Turkish sides held talks on the grain corridor.”

The statement did not provide details on potential casualties or structural damage from the attack.

Escalation in Targeting

This attack is part of a broader escalation by Russia, which has significantly increased long-range strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities and critical infrastructure in 2024. These assaults have caused severe damage and widespread power outages across the country.

The Kremlin maintains that these operations are intended to degrade Ukrainian military capabilities and are direct retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.
