Starmer Calls Trump’s NATO, Afghanistan Remarks ‘Insulting’

UK PM Starmer Slams Trump’s NATO Remarks as ‘Insulting’

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly criticised former US President Donald Trump’s recent comments on NATO and Afghanistan, labelling them “insulting” as he joined a wave of international pushback.

Key Takeaways

  • PM Keir Starmer called Trump’s NATO and Afghanistan remarks “insulting” to armed forces and Afghans.
  • Trump suggested the US might not defend NATO allies failing to meet spending targets and called the Afghanistan withdrawal “embarrassing”.
  • Starmer’s criticism aligns with other NATO leaders like Germany’s Scholz and Poland’s Duda.
  • The comments came during Starmer’s first NATO summit in Washington since taking office.

Condemnation of NATO Comments

Speaking at the NATO summit in Washington, Starmer said Trump’s suggestion that the US would not defend allies who miss defence spending targets was “not in our interests”.

“I think that’s insulting to the bravery and the sacrifice of our armed forces,” Starmer told ITV.

He added, “It’s also wrong to suggest that the US wouldn’t meet its obligations to NATO. That’s not in our interests, it’s not in the interests of the United States.”

Trump’s Controversial Rally Statements

At a Saturday rally, Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, claimed he told a NATO member he would “encourage” Russia to attack countries failing to meet the alliance’s spending target of 2% of GDP.

Criticism Over Afghanistan Remarks

Starmer also took issue with Trump’s description of President Joe Biden’s 2021 troop withdrawal from Afghanistan as the “most embarrassing moment” in US history.

“I think that’s insulting to the Afghans who lost their lives in that conflict,” the Prime Minister stated.

International Backing

Starmer’s condemnation follows similar criticism from other NATO leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Polish President Andrzej Duda, highlighting a unified allied response.

The UK Prime Minister is attending his first NATO summit since taking office last week and is scheduled to meet with President Biden and other world leaders during the three-day event.
