Karachi Mall Fire Kills 30, 16 Children Missing in Saddar Blaze

Karachi Shopping Mall Fire: Death Toll Hits 30, 16 Children Missing

A devastating fire at a shopping plaza in Karachi has claimed at least 30 lives, with 16 people, all of them minors, reported missing. The blaze broke out on Saturday, trapping victims inside the multi-storey building.

Key Takeaways

  • 30 confirmed dead, 16 children missing after Karachi mall fire.
  • Fire started in basement of RJ Shopping Mall in Saddar area.
  • Rescue operations hampered by congested location; cause suspected to be short circuit.
  • This is the second major fire incident in Karachi in recent months.

How the Tragedy Unfolded

The fire erupted in the basement of the RJ Shopping Mall, a building housing numerous electronic and cosmetic shops in Karachi’s busy Saddar area. Flames rapidly engulfed the upper floors, leaving many shoppers and workers with no escape route.

Rescue Efforts and Challenges

Rescue officials confirmed the recovery of 30 bodies. “Sixteen people, including 16 minors, are still missing,” officials stated. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

A massive contingent of firefighters and rescue personnel worked at the scene, battling the blaze and searching for survivors. Operations were severely hindered as the plaza is situated in a densely packed neighbourhood, blocking easy access for emergency vehicles.

Cause and Damage

While the exact cause remains under investigation, preliminary reports point to a possible electrical short circuit. The inferno caused extensive structural damage to the mall and adjacent shops.

A Recurring Safety Concern

This tragedy marks Karachi’s second major fire incident in months. In November last year, a fire at a Mehran Town chemical factory killed at least 10 people, raising serious questions about urban safety standards.
