Michigan Highway Pileup: 100 Vehicles, 1 Dead in Snowstorm Chaos

Key Takeaways

  • A massive pileup involving at least 100 vehicles shut down I-96 in Michigan during a severe snowstorm.
  • Authorities confirmed one fatality and multiple serious injuries amid “chaotic” scenes.
  • The crash occurred during near-whiteout conditions, part of a larger winter storm disrupting the northern US.
  • Officials have urged people to avoid travel as road conditions remain extremely hazardous.

A devastating chain-reaction crash involving roughly 100 vehicles on a Michigan interstate has left at least one person dead and multiple others seriously injured, officials confirmed. The massive pileup, stretching about a mile, occurred during a fierce winter storm that blanketed the region in whiteout conditions.

Chaos on Interstate 96

The incident unfolded around 10:30 AM on Monday on Interstate 96 in Clinton County, near St. Johns. Michigan State Police described a chaotic scene with multiple collisions involving passenger cars and semi-trucks over a long stretch of highway.

“It’s a very large scene, approximately a mile long with multiple vehicles, passenger vehicles and semi-trucks,” Lt. Brian Oleksyk of the Michigan State Police told reporters. “We have multiple injuries, some of them are serious.”

Several injured individuals were transported to local hospitals with conditions ranging from minor to critical. The exact casualty count was not immediately available.

Whiteout Conditions Blamed

The crash happened during intense lake-effect snow, which severely limited visibility. The National Weather Service had active winter storm warnings for the area, predicting 6 to 12 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 35 mph.

“We had near whiteout conditions, blowing and drifting snow,” Oleksyk said. “Road conditions were very poor at the time.”

Part of a Major Winter Storm

This tragedy is linked to a powerful winter storm system affecting much of the northern United States. From the Pacific Northwest to the Great Lakes and Northeast, the storm has delivered heavy snow, ice, and frigid temperatures, causing widespread flight cancellations, school closures, and power outages.

Cleanup and Warnings

Emergency crews from numerous agencies responded to the complex crash site. Cleanup and investigation were expected to last many hours, prompting the closure of I-96 in both directions. Authorities issued stern warnings to the public.

“If you don’t have to travel, please don’t,” the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office stated. “The roads are extremely hazardous.”

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving in severe winter weather. Safety officials consistently advise motorists to reduce speed, increase following distance, and ensure their vehicles are winter-ready.
