Iran Airspace Shut: IndiGo, Air India Warn of Flight Delays

Iran Airspace Shut: IndiGo, Air India Issue Travel Advisories as Flights Rerouted

Key Takeaways:

  • Iran closed its airspace following drone and missile strikes on Israel, disrupting international flights.
  • Indian carriers IndiGo and Air India have issued advisories, warning of longer flight times and delays due to rerouting.
  • The attack, a retaliation for an Israeli strike in Damascus, has escalated regional tensions, prompting a multinational military and diplomatic response.

Iran’s closure of its airspace has directly impacted international flight operations, with major Indian airlines issuing passenger advisories. The shutdown followed Iran’s launch of over 100 drones and missiles at Israel in a retaliatory strike, dramatically raising the risk of a wider Middle East conflict.

Airline Advisories: Longer Flight Times Expected

Both IndiGo and Air India confirmed that flights are being rerouted for safety, leading to potential delays.

IndiGo stated, “Due to the current situation affecting parts of the Middle East, we are making changes to flight paths on some routes. This may result in longer flight times on certain routes and associated delays.”

Air India said, “We are closely monitoring the developing situation… Presently, our aircraft will operate on alternate flight paths to and from India… Due to this, there may be longer flight times on certain routes and consequent delays.”

The Attack and Retaliation

The Iranian strike late Saturday was retaliation for what it called an Israeli attack on its consulate in Damascus on April 1. Tehran stated its action was punishment for “Israeli crimes.” Israel has not claimed responsibility for the consulate strike.

Israel’s military reported sirens and interceptions, with most threats neutralised outside its borders with help from the U.S., UK, and France. Minor damage was reported at one base.

International Response and Warnings

The situation triggered a swift global reaction. The U.S. pledged “ironclad” support, with its military intercepting drones. President Joe Biden plans to coordinate a G7 diplomatic response.

Iran warned, “Should the Israeli regime make another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe,” but also indicated it now “deemed the matter concluded.”

Regional Security Measures

The crisis forced several countries to adjust security postures:

  • Israel & Lebanon: Closed their airspace.
  • Jordan: Readied air defences to intercept violations.
  • Syria: Put air defence systems on high alert.

Israel also activated defence systems and ordered residents in several areas, including near the Dimona nuclear facility, into shelters.

The European Union, Britain, France, and several other nations condemned Iran’s attack.
