India’s First Coral Reef Research Centre Approved for Andaman Islands

India’s First Coral Reef Research Centre Coming to Andaman Islands

The government will establish India’s first National Coral Reef Research Institute (NCRRI) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with a ₹120 crore investment. This landmark facility will serve as the nation’s central hub for coral reef research, conservation, and monitoring.

Key Details About NCRRI

  • Location: Chidiyatapu, South Andaman
  • Investment: ₹120 crore
  • Function: Nodal agency for coral reef research across India
  • Managed by: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change

Sivaperuman, officer-in-charge of ZSI’s Andaman & Nicobar centre, described it as “an advanced coral reef research, conservation, and management centre.”

Importance of Coral Reef Protection

Highlighting the critical role of coral ecosystems, Sivaperuman explained: “Coral reefs play a pivotal role as they provide natural coastal protection against storms, working as a cushion against waves. The reefs help prevent loss of life and properties in the coastal region.”

Digital Initiatives and Biodiversity Significance

The ZSI Museum in Sri Vijay Puram will introduce QR codes for digital access to species information. Former ZSI director Kailash Chandra emphasized the islands’ status as one of India’s four biodiversity hotspots, hosting rich indigenous and migratory species.

Climate Change Concerns

Chandra expressed serious concern about rising sea levels and temperatures impacting marine habitats, particularly coral reefs. The government is encouraging biodiversity research through species naming opportunities and linking agriculture with island biodiversity.

The announcement came during a three-day workshop on Coastal and Marine Biodiversity attended by 20 personnel from Indian Coast Guard, INS Jarawa, Indian Army, and Andaman & Nicobar Police.
