Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Launch Date Confirmed for December

Key Takeaways

  • Vande Bharat sleeper train scheduled for December launch
  • First prototype undergoing final modifications after trials
  • Train aims to surpass Rajdhani Express comfort standards
  • 16-coach configuration with advanced safety and comfort features

Indian Railways is set to launch the much-anticipated Vande Bharat sleeper train in December, with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirming the timeline after extensive prototype testing. The first rake is currently undergoing final modifications to enhance passenger comfort before its official debut.

Prototype Refinements Underway

The initial Vande Bharat sleeper prototype has returned to BEML for modifications following comprehensive trials supervised by RDSO and the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that while the changes are minor, they’re being treated as major to ensure optimal passenger comfort.

“Changes are minor in nature, but we are treating them as major because we want to match the high standards of passenger comfort,” Vaishnaw stated.

PTI reports that modifications to the bogie and seats are currently in progress, with issues identified during initial testing being resolved in both the first and second trains. BEML is tasked with manufacturing 10 such trains.

Safety and Quality Enhancements

The Railway Ministry officially approved the 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper trains on October 28, recommending specific alterations for enhanced performance. Key safety requirements include:

  • Arc Fault Detection Device for fire prevention
  • AC duct repositioning
  • CCTV fire-survival cable implementation
  • European fire safety (EN 45545) and crash resistance (EN 15227) standards assessment

The ministry identified that emergency alarm buttons were hidden behind upper berth connectors, making them inaccessible during emergencies, and recommended relocation in future production.

Premium Features and Specifications

The Vande Bharat sleeper train boasts an impressive array of features:

  • Coach Configuration: 11 AC 3-tier, 4 AC 2-tier, and 1 AC First class compartment
  • Speed: 160 kmph operational, 180 kmph testing capability
  • Comfort: Specially designed night lighting, padded berths, improved upper berth accessibility
  • Facilities: Advanced bio-vacuum toilets, disabled access, baby care facilities, AC First class showers
  • Technology: Indigenous KAVACH anti-collision system, regenerative braking, automatic doors
  • Amenities: Personal reading lights, power outlets, refreshment tables, Centralised Coach Monitoring System

The train features fully sealed gangways for dust-free environment and temperature regulation, along with CCTV surveillance in each coach and emergency communication systems.

Built to European railway standards, the Vande Bharat sleeper aims to redefine overnight travel in India, offering superior comfort compared to existing Rajdhani Express services on long-distance routes.
