Arjun Erigaisi Reaches Chess World Cup Quarterfinals, Beats Aronian

Arjun Erigaisi Advances to Chess World Cup Quarterfinals

Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi has stormed into the quarterfinals of the FIDE Chess World Cup, defeating two-time champion Levon Aronian in a crucial round of 16 match. The victory makes him the highest-ranked player remaining in the tournament, just three wins away from the title.

Key Takeaways

  • Arjun Erigaisi defeats Levon Aronian to reach World Cup quarterfinals
  • Now the highest-ranked player remaining in the competition
  • P Harikrishna’s match against Martinez Alcantara heads to tiebreakers
  • Top three finishers qualify for the prestigious Candidates tournament

Strategic Victory Over Former Champion

Erigaisi secured his quarterfinal spot with an impressive victory using black pieces against the experienced American GM. The game remained balanced until Arjun broke through the center, creating an uneven pawn structure that allowed his knights to threaten the king side. Aronian couldn’t recover from the deteriorating position as Erigaisi methodically converted his advantage into a win.

Draw Offer Proved Turning Point

After the match, Arjun revealed that Aronian’s draw offer during the game gave him the confidence boost he needed. “I started regretting some of my moves,” the Indian GM admitted. “I wasn’t really sure if I was on the better side of equality or the worse side.”

“But when he played Knight e3 and offered a draw, that kind of gave me some confidence that he is happy with a draw. So, that gave me some leverage and after that it wasn’t so easy for him,” he added.

Focus on One Game at a Time

Despite becoming the tournament favorite, Erigaisi remains grounded. “It does not matter to me,” he said about his top ranking. “I am just happy that I am still there. I’ll take one match at a time and focus on that.”

Harikrishna Heads to Tiebreakers

Meanwhile, fellow Indian GM P Harikrishna drew his second game against Mexico’s Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara. Their round of 16 clash will be decided in Sunday’s tiebreakers, keeping India’s hopes alive for multiple quarterfinalists.

World Cup Standings and Candidates Qualification

The top three finishers at the Chess World Cup will earn spots in the prestigious Candidates tournament, the final step toward challenging for the World Chess Championship. Other notable results from Round 5 include Wei Yi’s victory over Samuel Sevian and several matches heading to tiebreaks.
