In a significant industry move, Sachin Katti has departed Intel after four years as Chief Technology and AI Officer to join OpenAI. He will focus on developing the compute infrastructure powering ChatGPT-maker’s AGI research and applications.

OpenAI Chairman Greg Brockman confirmed the appointment on X, stating: “Incredibly excited to work with him on designing and building our compute infrastructure, which will power our AGI research and scale its applications to benefit everyone.”

Intel has announced that CEO Lip-Bu Tan will temporarily assume Katti’s responsibilities. The chipmaker emphasized that “AI remains one of Intel’s highest strategic priorities” in an official statement.

Who Is Sachin Katti?

Sachin Katti brings impressive academic credentials to his new role, holding a BTech in Electrical Engineering from and a PhD in Computer Science from MIT.

Before his tenure at Intel, Katti served as a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Stanford University, where he earned recognition including the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award and William Bennett Prize.

Katti’s career extends beyond corporate leadership to successful entrepreneurship:

  • Founded Kumu Networks (2011) – An AI startup specializing in self-interference-cancellation technology where he remains involved as co-founder
  • Founded Uhana (2016) – Developed AI solutions for mobile-network optimization, later acquired by VMware in 2019

According to Intel’s official profile, Katti has been an influential telecommunications leader, co-chairing the O-RAN Alliance’s Technical Steering Committee and driving global adoption of open, intelligent radio-access networks.
